The Workshop

   The workshop of

Karl Dennis and Cathy Scanlan

I have been making stringed instruments since 1975 and began concentrating on the violin family more than 30 years ago. I studied violin making with Karl Roy and bow making with William Salchow as well as Arnold Bone. In subsequent years I have had the privilege of  working on and studying some of the greatest work of the 17th and 18th century Italian masters.  Their work continues to inspire and challenge. Although primarily involved in the making of new instruments I also concentrate on the adjustment and restoration of all violin family instruments both modern and early.

Cathy Scanlan is a graduate with a BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her eye for form and color are great assets in every aspect of work in the shop. Besides carrying the responsibility for the decorative carving on viols and vielles (see gallery 2), she is a fine violin maker in her own right.

We are always glad to have you visit the shop.  Please call ahead to arrange an appointment.  We are open Monday through Friday from 9 till 5 by appointment only.
